Some. Times. In. Our Lives?Coaches [Video]

Post image for Some. Times. In. Our Lives?Coaches [Video]

We all need friends? We all need..

Coaches?

So my amazing friend?shared this incredible video with me yesterday. ?She happened on it via the Instructional Coach Chat Wiki as we continue on our shared quest to learn more about best practices in education.

If I lost you there? come back to me? this video is ah-may-zing.

Imagine a fantastically talented young singer charged with performing our National Anthem if front of hundreds and hundreds of people at a basketball game.

A little bit intimidating right?

She starts, she sings?it?s beautiful?

Then? Two stanzas in, it all starts to go horribly horribly wrong.

The lyrics get messed up and she chokes.?She stops altogether. Her confidence is completely rattled.

From the sidelines enters one of the basketball coaches.
He walks up to her puts his arm around her and helps her find the words to get back on track.
She sings?
She gains confidence.
She belts out our national anthem and the crowd joins in on her heartfelt rendition.

It?s amazing.

Go watch it. Now. I?ll wait?

Find more videos like this on The Big Four

Right?!?

What an amazing example of the importance of coaches! Of why, no matter how amazing our talent (and this girl has some serious pipes!) we all can use some coaching.

Today, we were talking about this in the context of the people that spend more time on a daily basis with my kids than I do. Their teachers.

We?ve heard from them how having coaches and professional development feedback loops in their workplace is the standard of excellence and best practice. ?My kids? teachers (on top of everything else they do) are still on a quest for self-improvement -and to me, that makes them my heroes.

Such a great idea right? Coaches. For teachers. Because no matter how awesome we are (and my kids? teachers ARE awesome) we all would love to have a coach in our corner like the one in this video.

Come to think of it, I could use one of these as a parent sometimes?

What did you think of the video? Does your school use coaches??

'American Idol' Report Card: Joshua Ledet, Heejun Han Back In The Hunt

Top 9 take on their idols, with surprising results. Who soared? Who sunk? Here are our grades!
By James Montgomery

We can all probably agree that the highlight of Wednesday night's "American Idol" was Jason Derülo's bedazzled neck brace, which shone brighter than a dozen Jessica Sanchezes and had more charisma than an army of Hollie Cavanaghs.

But alas, we can't give out grades based on style alone, which means that once again, we're forced to focus on the singing. And luckily, said singing was actually pretty spot-on this week, as the top 9 took on the songs of their idols, leading to some genuine "goosies" moments (thanks, J.Lo) and more standing ovations than the State of the Union address.

Sure, there were the usual assortment of middling performances, too ... but for one night at least, "Idol" was back to its old compelling self. Sort of. Look, it's Season 11; I'm trying as hard as I can. So who soared? Who scored redemption? And who should probably start packing their bags right now? Read on for our report card!

Joshua Ledet: Oh sh--, he's doing Harry Nilsson! Oh, wait — he's doing the Mariah version of "Without You." Still, this was a total powerhouse of a performance. Subtle in some spots, big (big!) in others, perfect throughout, he put genuine emotion into the tune, got raw and vulnerable and, as a result, stole the show. Of course, it's entirely possible some folks might think this one was too weird or something, but there are still people out there who think Rick Santorum would make a good president, too. After a few weeks in the wilderness, Mantasia officially roared back tonight. And Google "Harry Nilsson" please. A

Jessica Sanchez: Totally called she'd be doing Beyoncé. She slowed down "Sweet Dreams," which was a bit of an odd choice, and yet also a supremely confident one. For once, she pulled things back, and maybe suffered a bit for doing so, but there were still plenty of subtly great moments, particularly in the verses. Might not have been her best — it definitely lacked in vocal fireworks — but who says she has to blow it out of the box every week? And really, it was good enough on this night. Can't wait until she loses to Phillip Phillips or Colton Dixon in the finals, and I never have to watch this show again. B

Heejun Han: Newly humble Heejun ditched the shtick and instead focused on the singing and, in the process, totally reinvigorated his "Idol" campaign. His breathy, confident take on Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You" had everyone going nuts, and understandably so: It was a perfect song for him and a nearly perfect performance. I've taken a few potshots at him in these report cards, but I'll be the first to admit that when Heejun is on, well, Heejun is on. Seemed willing to atone for last week's debacle, too, until he did a knock-knock joke. Dammit, dude. B

Phillip Phillips: Growled and shouted ("growted"?) his way through Jonny Lang's "Still Rainin'," and I would bring up the point that in previous years, competitors like him would've been criticized for doing the same thing every week, but since this season everyone just does the same thing every week, well, never mind. The vein in his forehead was the most compelling part of this, by far. "I feel like we're standing up too much tonight," J.Lo declared. You're not the only one, sister. C+

Colton Dixon: Did Lifehouse's "Everything," which he'll have you know is his "favorite worship song." And just to reinforce that point, he ended it on his knees. Now we know who Tim Tebow's voting for. Sorta pitchy — bordering on bleating — and a bit meandering, but it's not like any of that really matters, since the girls liked it. Randy doubled up the praise, first saying he could see him "doing Switchfoot" (a compliment?) and then proclaiming, "I could be looking at a contender for the title!" Of course, dawg ... he is a toothsome white guy, after all. C

Skylar Laine: No way, she did Miranda Lambert! Way to step outside the comfort ... oh, why does it even matter? For those keeping score at home, she took on "Gunpowder and Lead," and it was basically the same thing we've seen every single week from her: bounding, energetic, twangy, a bit of 'tude, a few high spots thrown in for good measure. "Unbridled," J.Lo said. "Over the top," Steven added. "Mississippi!" Randy piled on. Yep. Surely she needs to do something different eventually, right? C

DeAndre Brackensick: Ryan introduced him by yelling, "Just think, you could be driving to work tomorrow jamming to DeAndre!" perhaps because vehicular manslaughter has been trending down in recent years. Did Eric Benet's "Sometimes I Cry," since "Eric Benet is exactly what I want to be" (a sex addict?), then he took the stage wearing a leather duster and vest that made him look like Dr. Sexx, Frontier Loverman. Despite all that — and his warbly falsetto (which bordered on torturous) — it was still sorta bland. Of course, he got a standing ovation from the judges. And then Steven declared, "You gave Prince a run for his money." I officially give up. C-

Hollie Cavanagh: The biggest problem with Cavanagh isn't her voice, which is probably the second-best in the competiton, but rather the sub-robotic level of emotion she brings to the stage. And the latter was definitely on display tonight. After bonding with Stevie Nicks (Stevie Nicks!) during rehearsals, she pledged to bring genuine spirit to her version of Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take the Wheel." What we got instead was a flat, by-the-numbers ballad, the kind of thing she's been doing for weeks now. Almost instantly forgettable, she may be in trouble. But, hey, at least there was snow! C-

Elise Testone: Did Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," thus proving that she'd be a totally fun chick to hang out with. Also seemed to have borrowed Steven Tyler's bellbottoms to do so (Seacrest totally noticed, which is why he's the best live-man in the business). Look, this was fun, and it sorta rocked, but it was also really shouty, and no matter what the judges said, this is usually the kind of performance that sends female singers packing. She'll get voted off on Thursday (March 29). As a performance? B As a tactical decision? D

Jerry Lee Lewis weds for 7th time in Mississippi

(AP) ? Jerry Lee Lewis has wed for the seventh time in a ceremony this month in Mississippi, according to a newspaper report.

The Natchez Democrat (http://bit.ly/HxLYLa ) reports that Lewis, nicknamed "The Killer," married Judith Brown on March 9. She has been the 76-year-old country and early rock music legend's caregiver. She also formerly was married to Lewis' cousin, Rusty. Rusty's older sister, Myra Gale Brown, married Lewis in 1957 when she was 13 and was his third wife. The marriage caused shockwaves for Lewis' career.

Lewis' last marriage ended in 2004 when he divorced Kerrie McCarver after 20 years together.

The newspaper reports the 62-year-old Brown and Lewis married at a private home in Natchez, Miss., and have spent the past three weeks touring Mississippi and Louisiana.

Brown told the Democrat she became Lewis' caregiver about two years ago.

'Small business,' my ass | Suburban Guerrilla

You know, I was just thinking that millionaires needed another tax cut!

Earlier today ThinkProgress?reported?that the House Ways and Means Committee is expected to approve a proposal by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) that is misleadingly entitled the Small Business Tax Cut Act.

People who have read the bill and not just its title, however, have noted that it is?extremely poorly targeted?at small businesses. It is, in fact, just another tax cut for rich people. Among the biggest beneficiaries would be the owners of extremely profitable businesses like?Oprah Winfrey?s production company?and?professional sports teams?like theSuper Bowl champion New York Giants, as well as highly paid professionals like lawyers, lobbyists, doctors, and consultants.

The Tax Policy Center has now estimated who benefits from Cantor?s bill. Among TPC?sfindings:

??The top 1 percent would receive an average tax cut that is 1000 times bigger than the average tax cut for people in the middle quintile?($23 vs. $23,000). The top 0.1 percent would receive an average tax cut of more than $130,000.

??Half of the tax benefits would go to millionaires, who comprise less than one-half of one percent of all taxpayers and?only 4 percent?of actual small business owners according to a recent Treasury study. Millionaires, on average, would get a tax cut of $45,000 ? almost as much as median household income in 2010.

??Business owners with annual income of $200,000 or less ? who comprise more than 75 percent of small business owners ? would receive only 16 percent of the benefit from Cantor?s bill.

Finding Purpose Beyond the Hysteria of Social Media Marketing ...

Companies looking to build their brands and generate leads are turning to social media marketing at a remarkable rate. Everybody, and every company, seems to have a Facebook page, Twitter account, LinkedIn account, and a blog. They pay an employee or outsource to some self-proclaimed ?Social Media Guru,? and they post weekly, daily, and in some cases every few hours in the desperate attempt to find Fans and Followers. And at the end of the day, with posts in the thousands, and followers in the teens and twenties, these misguided companies find themselves shouting to an empty and uninvolved audience: generating few quality leads and failing to significantly expand their online visibility.

Don?t get me wrong, social media definitely has its place in the online marketing landscape. It is a powerful tool that, when appropriately applied, has an unbridled ability to build communication between businesses and their clients, customers, and consumers. There are many restaurants out there that happily ? and successfully ? promote their nightly specials in these online social forums, and there are many social service providers whose coffers (and communities) benefit greatly from an aware audience.

But when venturing out into the wild and over-competitive world of Likes, Tweets, +s, Connects, Follows, Reads, Shares, and whatever onomatopoeia or verb comes next, companies should first, limit their over-night expectations, and then follow a bottom-up, researched, and comprehensive online marketing model.

The social media market?s primary benefit to companies just joining the party is its SEO opportunities. Google, Yahoo, and the major search engines out there currently consider back links from popular social media sites as important as back links from more traditional online media venues. Developing optimized content for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs can markedly help your business? website climb up the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

The next benefit afforded by social media marketing is its ability to market directly to targeted and active audiences. Unless a company already enjoys a large and engaged Likes list on Facebook, their posts on important company news will not likely develop many quality leads. By bringing this same information to another venue, a popular blog in their niche, for instance, the company can generate significantly more quality leads, drive more traffic to their site, and build their social media audience. Finding the right blog to share in requires research and dedication, not fortune.

Simply creating and populating a social media page and building its presence does not necessarily build its effectiveness. Your business? social media strategy should be consistent with an overall internet marketing effort based upon thoroughly researched keyword strategies, website optimization, email campaigns and the like. Without these dedicated efforts, your posts might be plenty, but their power to build your business will likely remain flat.

Colo. wildfire could be linked to controlled burn

(AP) ? Investigators on Tuesday were trying to determine whether a controlled burn designed to minimize wildfire risk reignited and became a stubborn mountain wildfire that forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes and may have caused the deaths of two people.

Federal agencies dispatched two large air tankers to tackle the 7-square-mile blaze that damaged or destroyed 28 structures and resulted in mandatory evacuations of 900 homes south of the commuter town of Conifer, about 8,200 feet up in the Rockies foothills and 25 miles southwest of downtown Denver.

Some 450 firefighters from Colorado, Idaho, Nevada and Utah were sent to assist 250 firefighters on the ground.

The fire consumed grass, brush and some Ponderosa Pine tree canopies. Winds were 20 mph to 30 mph before calming late Tuesday.

Denver's tightly populated southwestern suburbs were not threatened.

Jefferson County sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said the wildfire may have sprung from a controlled burn. The Colorado State Forest Service did conduct a 35-acre burn in the region on Thursday ? on land belonging to Denver's water authority ? said forest service spokesman Ryan Lockwood. By destroying shrubs and woods in a controlled burn, there should be less material to fuel a wildfire.

Crews finished the effort on Friday and patrolled the 35-acre perimeter daily to ensure it was out, Lockwood said. It was during Monday's patrol that a state forest service crew spotted the wildfire ? also on Denver Water property ? alerted authorities, and began fighting it, Lockwood said. It wasn't clear if the wildfire was inside the controlled burn zone.

The Jefferson County sheriff's office will determine the cause of the blaze, while the Colorado State Forest Service was conducting its own review, Lockwood said.

Stacy Chesney, a spokeswoman for Denver Water, said the agency was "trying to be proactive" to protect water supplies from soil runoff caused by deforestation.

The area has several watersheds that feed metropolitan Denver and is several miles from the location of the 2002 Hayman fire, one of Colorado's worst, which destroyed 133 homes and 466 outbuildings over 215 square miles.

Protocols for controlled fires include monitoring them until they are determined to be cold ? meaning nothing is at risk for reigniting, said Roberta D'Amico, spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

Fire officials normally check weather, terrain and other factors to create a burn plan and alert municipal authorities, D'Amico said.

Carole Walker, director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, said state agencies have limited immunity for performing regular duties.

"They have immunity on the duties of managing a forest. It would have to be determined they were negligent or acting outside their duties" for property owners to seek compensation, Walker said.

Officials found the bodies of a man and woman at a destroyed home, said Daniel Hatlestad of the Jefferson County Incident Management Team. They were identified as Sam Lamar Lucas, 77, and Linda M. Lucas, 76. A cause of death was pending for both.

Another woman who lives in the fire zone was reported missing, authorities said.

Residents of 6,500 houses were warned Tuesday to be ready to leave because of the fire's erratic behavior. Many homes are in winding canyons, and authorities wanted to give citizens as much advance warning as possible.

Evacuees formed a long line to see a list of damaged properties posted by the Red Cross at Conifer High School. Residents groaned when Hatlestad told them it wasn't known when the fire would be contained.

"Know that there are hundreds of people out there right now working to save your homes," Hatlestad said.

"I understand that it's a difficult situation, but it's our house, and we're in the target zone," said John Ryan, 47.

Hatlestad said the fire burned so hot that it melted farm and construction machinery, creating a silver stream of molten metal and softening the soles of deputies' shoes.

The fire threat in much of Colorado has grown during an unusually dry and warm March. On March 18, a grass fire charred 37 square miles in eastern Colorado and injured three firefighters.

As the fire near Conifer burned, Jefferson County officials implemented fire restrictions prohibiting any use of fireworks; fires unless they are built in permanently constructed fire grates in a developed park, campground or picnic area; and smoking, except within enclosed vehicles or buildings, a developed recreation site, or an area barren of combustible material within 3 feet.

Across the West, most states face normal wildfire danger, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho. However, the potential for summer fires is significantly "above normal" for New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California, said center meteorologist Ed Delgado,

"It's just a changing weather pattern. We're exiting La Nina, and becoming more neutral in that pattern," Delgado said. "Historically when we've entered this weather pattern, we've had situations that would be conducive to those areas having a higher fire threat."

La Nina is a cooling of the surface water in the Pacific Ocean that causes disruptions to weather patterns.

Thirty feet down, an arm of water extends out from a deep pool to cover a rock shelf the size of a Ping-Pong table with up to two and a half feet of hot water. This shallow recess is home to 100 much-studied adult Devils Hole pupfish, or Cyprinodon diabolis. Living nowhere else on the planet, the pupfish receive protection from human harm by force of federal law and padlocked gates.

Shortly after 11 A.M., Goldstein was imparting the 10,000-year history of Devils Hole and its piscine denizens to me when the water level began rising and sinking by quarter-inches, then inches, then feet. As we scrambled up the rocky incline, the pool was sucked out of the hole almost entirely with a giant gurgle. It rushed back in, dislodging a metal walkway over the shelf and climbing up the sides of the hole toward us. After a few more gargles and belches, the pool waters returned to a normal level. The rock shelf had been swept clean of vegetation and pupfish eggs.

?

Video: Seismic waves from an earthquake 2,000 miles distant caused a tsunami to roll through the underground pool at Devils Hole in Nevada. Violent oscillations decimated the small breeding area of the endangered species of pupfish that live nowhere else on earth but in these hot waters.

We later learned that the underground tsunami had resulted from seismic waves emanating from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, 12 miles deep, near the Mexican state of Oaxaca, 2,000 miles distant. According to Kevin Wilson, the National Park Service's aquatic ecologist at Devils Hole, the tidal effects of earthquakes have been directly observed on only three occasions since a 1976 Supreme Court ruling preserved the Devils Hole pupfish by restricting agricultural pumping of the Amargosa Valley aquifer. "More people have walked on the moon than have witnessed the effects of an earthquake at Devils Hole," Wilson says.

[In April 2010, U.S. Geological Survey researcher Ambre Chaudoin captured a Devils Hole tsunami with cameras tightly focused on the bottom of the pool. This was the first video of such an event: Video Shows Baja Earthquake Created a Devilish "Mini-Tsunami" for Endangered Devils Hole Pupfish]

Goldstein and I captured the rare event with pocket-size video cameras, so you can share in our adventure. Even without the excitement of an underground tsunami as a backdrop, the history of Devils Hole and its pupfish residents is worth a revisit.

Isolated in the pool by retreating ice 10,000 years ago, the Devils Hole pupfish have long feasted on algae, small invertebrates and, occasionally, baby pupfish. The fish breed and lay their eggs in the shallow, 92 degree Fahrenheit water that submerges the rock shelf. The deep pool has been explored by human divers to a depth of 435 feet. The inch-long fish are known to dive down 24 meters, but they prefer to hang out on the shelf because it is covered with edible vegetation and receives occasional sunlight. Cables snake along the stone walls just above and connect to the instruments that monitor temperature and other environmental indicators. Divers count the fish twice a year. The population has ranged from 500 in the 1980s to a near catastrophic low of 38 in 2006 to 119 adults, at last count.

And what about the aftermath of our earthmoving adventure?

The walkways and instruments were repaired within hours. This type of periodic disturbance, Wilson says, is not a disaster for the fish; it resets the ecology of the pool, improving it over the long haul. Immediately after their food and eggs were swept away by the tides, the fish responded with a frenzy of mating. Environmental disaster, it seems, acted as an aphrodisiac

MASSENA, N.Y. (AP) ? Larry Thompson sits high in his tractor cab and drives to a chain-link fence along his family property on the Mohawk Indians' Akwesasne Reservation, where they fished, grew vegetables and played as children. He points to a toxic landfill about 30 feet away, stretching toward the St. Lawrence River.

"The whole hill," he says evenly. "Our gardens were right here, where that sign is."

Thompson's family put up the sign 20 years ago, warning: "PCBs, danger area."

The rural landscape, with houses scattered among fields and trees and along the river, is part of ancestral tribal homelands that once extended 125 miles south to the Mohawk River. The reservation, about 21 square miles on the U.S. and Canadian sides of the St. Lawrence, is home to about 16,000 people.

Immediately upstream is a shuttered General Motors factory, now a federal Superfund site where tons of toxic waste have been removed. Tons more remain, including the 12-acre landfill that has been capped with a layer of clay and grass and declared safe, no longer a threat.

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls ? considered probable carcinogens ? are the main contaminant, dumped as sludge after use as electrical equipment coolants. Studies 20 years ago documented higher than normal PCB levels in the breast milk of Akwesasne nursing mothers and more recently in adolescents; the toxins persist in human tissue for years. High levels have been found in St. Lawrence River turtles and fish, which the state cautions against eating.

"There's no question there's a legacy of PCB contamination in this area," said Judith Enck, regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and a former top environmental official for New York. "And the Mohawks have raised legitimate concerns for decades."

Despite government assurances that immediate health and environmental hazards are gone, anger and fear persist over what some people here see as a long-running attack on their land, their lives and even their sovereignty. Thompson's wife, Dana Leigh, calls it environmental genocide and a continuation of George Washington's 1779 order to colonial troops to lay waste to their settlements.

Among 89 polluted ex-GM industrial locations around the country, the 270-acre site at Massena is getting the largest single share, about $121 million, of the $773 million cleanup budget established in bankruptcy court last year. The new, post-bankruptcy General Motors is no longer legally liable, but Thompson says the company, which posted 2011 net income of $7.6 billion, should pay for a full cleanup and remove the landfill.

"The fact that it's still there, people are frustrated about it," said Ken Jock, director of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's environmental division. "It seemed like it's a commonsense thing. When you dump your waste in the back, you clean up your mess."

The tribal council maintains it never consented to a permanent landfill, even in its agreement 20 years ago to a cleanup plan with EPA, the car manufacturer, and the state of New York.

Thompson, 57, drove his backhoe last summer through the fence and began digging up the landfill himself. The former steelworker, who was arrested and spent four days in jail, claims the Superfund site is actually on Mohawk land that was never legally ceded. His initial court appearances drew crowds of supporters.

"I hold the federal government responsible, New York state responsible, Chevrolet responsible," Thompson said. "As it is, they made a deal. They think that's over with? I don't think so."

He and his wife, who have three children and 13 grandchildren, said they have a responsibility to look ahead for the welfare of future generations.

Thompson is free on bond and faces trial, probably this fall, on a felony count of criminal mischief and misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. RACER Trust, which owns the site, wants $70,000 for minor landfill repairs.

Prosecutors declined to comment.

"The real crime that's been committed here is by General Motors," said James Ransom, former St. Regis Mohawk chief. He said the issue is money ? and everyone at Akwesasne agrees with Thompson. "The United States basically let them shed their toxic assets. Communities like ours pay the price for that."

The tribal council said it doesn't condone what Thompson did but understands his aggravation. For his part, Thompson, who goes by the Indian name Kanietakeron, has renounced his affiliation with the tribe in court papers, saying he is "a true sovereign" who can claim the land under its original title, a claim that includes the GM site.

Altogether 82, or almost 5 percent, of federal Superfund sites designated for priority treatment nationally are classified as "Native American Interest," including Massena and four others in New York.

GM made aluminum cylinder heads here starting in 1958, polluting the land and water with PCBs, heavy metals and other toxics. It closed in 2009. The site was designated a federal Superfund priority in 1984, with contamination in two disposal areas, the industrial landfill and four lagoons.

The federal government says it has eliminated the "immediate exposure pathways" of contaminants leaking into the river and groundwater. After river dredging, groundwater containment and waste removal, the cleanup agreement calls for leaving the landfill as it is. Monitoring and other cleanup work continue.

"We believe that the 12-acre landfill has been contained and that it does not pose a threat to public health and the environment," said EPA's Enck.

But Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and Environment at the State University at Albany, said the landfill poses a health threat because of PCB air contamination.

"In fact landfills are not secure," Carpenter said. "PCBs volatilize and escape into the air. I'd be very much in favor of digging it up. It should be moved totally away from the reservation."

Enck said plans do call for the landfill to be moved 150 feet from the tribal border in 2014. Carpenter said the EPA has made real cleanup progress, but that would do more harm than good.

On Thompson's side of the fence, several houses on the reservation are a stone's throw from the landfill and along the river where people still live. The house where Thompson grew up is here at Raquette Point; Thompson and his wife moved out 24 years ago when they learned of the pollution.

Akwesasne also lies downstream and downwind from Reynolds and ALCOA aluminum factories that were also polluters. Ransom, the former chief, said fluoride from those factories made cattle sick.

Thompson believes cancer, diabetes, thyroid disease and other ailments have afflicted generations of people who lived on the reservation. While there are no definitive cancer studies proving the PCBs have caused illness at Akwesasne, Carpenter said recent research has shown a strong relationship between PCBs and low thyroid hormones, adult diabetes and heart disease.

Thompson says he was pushed to act partly because of his sister's kidney cancer and the liver cancer of a childhood friend, though neither illness is officially attributed to the pollution.

Neither the state health department nor St. Regis tribal officials have recent data on cancer cases in the region, spokesmen said.

Air and groundwater monitoring in the area continues, Jock said, and the tribe's environmental division plans to sample fish in the St. Lawrence and its tributaries this summer for PCBs and other contaminants, duplicating a major study in 1988 that found high levels of PCBs in fish.

"We expect that levels will be lower," Jock said. "But we aren't sure about how much or whether we're going to get to safe levels for Mohawks to consume."

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

(AP) ? A psychologist who looked into a 1998 allegation against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky told police at the time that his behavior fit the profile of a likely pedophile, NBC News reported Saturday.

Yet Sandusky was not criminally charged, nor placed on a state registry of suspected child abusers, and prosecutors say he continued assaulting boys for more than a decade until his arrest in November.

NBC obtained a copy of the campus police department's investigatory report on an encounter in which Sandusky was accused of having inappropriate contact with an 11-year-old boy with whom he had showered naked on the Penn State campus.

The police file includes the report of State College psychologist Alycia Chambers, who interviewed and provided counseling to the boy.

"My consultants agree that the incidents meet all of our definitions, based on experience and education, of a likely pedophile's pattern of building trust and gradual introduction of physical touch, within a context of a 'loving,' 'special' relationship," Chambers wrote.

However, a second psychologist, John Seasock, concluded that Sandusky had neither assaulted the boy nor fit the profile of a pedophile.

Chambers and Seasock did not immediately return phone messages left at their offices Saturday.

Centre County prosecutors ultimately decided not to charge Sandusky, and the case was closed until a statewide grand jury accused the retired defensive coordinator of abusing the boy and nine others over a 15-year period. Sandusky, who faces more than 50 counts of child sex abuse, has pleaded innocent and awaits trial.

Chambers' warning to authorities raises new questions about the university's failure to stop Sandusky. Eight of the 10 boys were attacked on campus, prosecutors allege.

In 2002, four years after the 1998 investigation, prosecutors say then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary caught Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the football showers. McQueary reported what he saw to coach Joe Paterno, who, in turn, reported the allegation to university officials. But no police investigation was ever done.

Penn State said in a statement Saturday that it would not comment, citing ongoing investigations.

Sandusky's attorney, Joseph Amendola, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Seasock's report was "exculpable" and that the 1998 incident was not as clear-cut as Chambers made it out to be.

"We could get five psychologists, child psychologists, who specialize maybe in sexual dysfunctions or pedophilia look at the same case and talk to the same people and come up with five different conclusions," he said in a phone interview.

The 1998 allegation was the first known complaint made to authorities about Sandusky. A woman called the Penn State police department, saying she was troubled after her 11-year-old son told her he had showered naked with Sandusky on campus.

Prosecutors say Sandusky lathered up the boy ? known as Victim 6 in the state's current criminal case ? bear-hugged him naked from behind, and picked him up and put his head under the shower. Detectives say that later, with police secretly listening in, Sandusky told the boy's mother the joint shower had been a mistake, and blurted: "I wish I were dead."

The woman's complaint triggered a separate review by the state Department of Public Welfare, which found no indication of abuse by Sandusky.

But state welfare department investigator Jerry Lauro told AP in December that he didn't have access to the criminal investigative file. On Wednesday, he told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg that he never would have closed the case had he seen the reports from Chambers and the second psychologist, Seasock.

"The course of history could have been changed," Lauro told the newspaper, which first reported the existence of the twin psychological reports.

"The conclusions (Chambers) had drawn in her report were pretty damaging," Lauro told the paper. "I would have made a different decision. ... It's unbelievable, and it gets my blood pressure going when I think about it."

Seasock, who worked with Centre County Office of Children and Youth Services, interviewed the boy for an hour and wrote in his report ? also included in the police file obtained by NBC ? that he did not find any evidence of "grooming" or "inappropriate sexual behavior" by Sandusky.

"All the interactions reported by (the boy) can be typically defined as normal between a healthy adult and a young adolescent male," Seasock wrote.

Seasock, however, did not review Chambers' report or prior interviews with the boy before submitting his own report, the police report indicates, nor did he elicit key details, including the fact that Sandusky had kissed the boy and told him he loved him.

Amendola said that Chambers has refused to talk to the defense, but that he would try anew in light of the NBC report.

"Any argument the commonwealth had about privilege is out the window," said Amendola. He said he found the timing of the NBC report curious because it came several days after a judge ordered the attorney general to turn over the psychological reports to the defense unless prosecutors could persuade the court they are not subject to disclosure.

Chambers told NBC in an interview that she was horrified to learn that Sandusky allegedly continued assaulting boys long after she warned Penn State authorities about him.

"I was horrified to know that there were so many other innocent boys who had been subject to this, who had their hearts and minds confused, their bodies violated. It's unspeakable," she said.

Chambers told NBC her 1998 investigation found "behavior that was consistent with a predator, a male predator, a pedophile."
